What is The PA Beer Summit About?

“It’s about freedom,” said Chester County resident Brit Piper, “The PA Beer Summit is a fun, easy way to show Pennsylvania’s legislators that we’re tired of living with the last vestiges of Prohibition. We want to control our own choices.”

Pennsylvania is one of only two states left – the other is Utah – where the government retains an exclusive state-run monopoly on the retail and wholesale distribution of wine and spirits. “It’s about freedom,” said Philadelphia resident Brandon Stokes, “This really isn’t a partisan issue. In fact, in a time of great political polarization, it’s something most of us can agree on.”

The numbers support this assessment. A recent survey of more than 1,100 Pennsylvania residents co-sponsored by the Commonwealth Foundation, Pennsylvania’s free-market think tank, and Keystone Politics, Pennsylvania’s source for liberal political news and commentary, found that 70 percent of Republicans and Independents, nearly 60 percent of liberals, and even 55 percent of union households favor abolishing the state-run liquor monopoly.  “Besides the conflict of interest that the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board has being both a purveyor and a regulator of alcohol,’ said Delaware County resident Lisa Esler, “Government control keeps prices artificially high, limits our choices in-store, limits the number of outlets where we can buy what we want, and chases many across state lines to make their purchases. I want to be able to shop in Pennsylvania.”

The PA Beer Summit is a non-political way to bring the issue, again, to the attention of Pennsylvania’s legislators. For up-to-date information about the event, visit the Summit web site at, or the individual event location registration pages listed above. Tweet about it using #PABeerSummit.

The PA Beer Summit is sponsored by the Coalition for Advancing Freedom, First Friday Philly, and Chris Stigall, in conjunction with Americans for Prosperity Pennsylvania, American Majority Action Pennsylvania, Citizens Alliance of Pennsylvania, the Commonwealth Foundation, WPHT-AM, and Chris Stigall.
